CIS FINAL 8: Gee-Gee’s shake off Rd. 1 loss, but pushed to brink by Thompson Rivers WolfPack

OTTAWA 78 THOMPSON RIVERS 77

Two of next season’s top fifth-year seniors gave a taste of what’s to come next season in consolation round action at the CIS Final 8 on Friday in Vancouver.

Ottawa guard Caleb Agada, the CIS Defensive Player of the Year, scored a game-high 24 points to led the Gee-Gee’s to a one-point win over Kamloops’ Thompson Rivers WolfPack and it’s 6-foot-8 forward Voldymyr Iegorov, who finished with 21 points. TRU’s fifth-year forward Josh Wolfram finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Ottawa played without injured CIS Player of the Year Mike L’Africain.

“Caleb is a really good player and with Mike out we knew would lean on him a little more,” said Ottawa head coach James Derouin. “He’s been fighting back from an injury the last month or so. Tonight he stayed out of foul trouble and played great. But we’re playing now for (next season) and tonight was game one.”

The Gee-Gees will play for fifth place on Saturday (12 p.m.) against the winner of Friday’s second consolation-round contest between the host UBC Thunderbirds and the Quebec champion McGill Redmen on Montreal.

Thompson Rivers, making its first-ever Final 8 appearnace, opened play Thursday with a 91-75 loss to Carleton.

“I am proud of my guys.” said TRU head coach Scott Clark. “It was not an easy game to play and a lot of the emotion left the building yesterday when we lost. So to come back and give a good effort showed some character.”
